Here’s a fantastic song by two greats: Aldir Blanc and João Bosco. It is, however, a difficult song for non-native speakers due to quite a few obscure cultural referents. In the lyrics below, I’ve used footnotes to try to explain some of the terms.

The goiabada of the title is essentially guava paste, a very common and yummy, rustic sweet in Brazil. It is customarily eaten as a dessert together with queijo fresco (often called queijo Minas), similar (but often much lighter) to the queso fresco popular in many Latin American lands.

[1] trabalhadores rurais itinerantes que se ocupam em tarefas temporárias sem vínculo empregatício; empregados que comem no local de trabalho a boia (comida) que trazem de casa (tal como os boias-frias rurais)

[3] battery-operated radio

[4] rustic type of cooking stove, using kerosene, I believe.

[5] Used to carry lunch to work

[6] plural of “pai-de-santo”, figure of authority and mentor in the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé

[7] pau-de-arara: a kind of flat-bed truck, used by many Northeastern Brazilians to emigrate to the South. Thus, the term can signify Nordestinos (Northeasterners).

[9] pessoa que atende os fregueses nos estabelecimentos comerciais, com ou sem balcão; vendedor, caixeiro

Caros alunos,

I felt that class went well tonight and hope you felt so, too. It’s starting to gel, no?

Here’s the homework to do between now and Monday, November 30:

1) do the exercises on the pdf I sent today “emprego do pretérito perfeito”

2) start learning the vocabulary for lição 6 by studying the online flashcards (Ponto website)

3) when you are ready with the vocab on roupas , do exercises in the Manual pp.133-134

4) pp.134-138 are practice exercises for the pretérito perfeito (preterit)– if you are short on time, focus on these exercises

5) take a look at the online “practice exercises” for lição 6 and do any that you feel comfortable with that focus on a) preterit and b) new vocabulary of clothing and accessories (appropriate topics for Black Friday, não é? )

Wednesday class will focus on the past tense pretérito perfeito verb forms and use.

Between Monday evening and Wednesday class, I’d like for you to do some exercises on the preterit tense (simple past, pretérito perfeito)

I will send a pdf by email to help introduce these verb conjugations.

For now, here are the regular -ar, -er, and -ir verb conjugations in the preterit tense, as well as the conjugation for the verb ir (very irregular, but highest frequency verb in this tense)

Regular -ar verb in pretérito perfeito: falar

eu falei (pronounced fall-eh)

você/ele/ela/o senhor/a senhora falou (pronounced fall-oh)

nós falamos

(note that the nós form is THE SAME as present tense. In Portugal there is an accent on the second vowel)

eles / vocês / as senhoras falaram

REGULAR -ER VERB in pretérito perfeito: BEBER

eu bebi

você / ele / ela / o senhor bebeu

REGULAR -IR VERB in pretérito perfeito: ASSISTIR
